summary

Senior Project Managers are instrumental in overseeing and coordinating the successful completion of single or multiple construction projects. Their primary focus is on delivering projects on time, within budget, ensuring profitability, and adhering to specified quality standards. SPMs serve as BIG Construction's representative on the Owner-Architect-BIG team, demonstrating leadership in training, mentoring, and coaching Project Managers (PMs) and Project Engineers (PEs). The role involves protecting and promoting the interests of BIG Construction in all matters, fostering positive relationships within the Project Team, and making strategic decisions that impact customer relationships and project profitability.

key responsibilities

  • Lead preconstruction activities specific to construction projects, including estimating, operations planning, and scheduling.
  • Participate in developing project schedules and sequencing of work, ensuring alignment with trade contractors' contractual obligations.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of owner contracts, implementing risk mitigation measures, and keeping the project team informed.
  • Review and ensure accuracy of subcontracts, Purchase Orders (POs), and change orders.
  • Delegate appropriate authority to Superintendents to fulfill their responsibilities.
  • Oversee the change order process, ensuring proper documentation, prompt submission, and inclusion of provisions for direct costs, overhead, profit, and time extensions.
  • Manage, review, and validate project financials, including progress and cost reports.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with owners, subcontractors, and consultants.
  • Ensure strict adherence to ethics and compliance requirements.
  • Develop strong relationships with clients and architects, enhancing opportunities for further negotiated work.
  • Direct the training and development of personnel for future management and supervisory roles.
  • Engage in new project pursuits supporting Business Development.
  • Provide Business Development with market insights gained through client interactions for future project opportunities.
  • Prepare and participate in client presentations and project interviews.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere through effective communication and collaboration.
  • Position allows for occasional telecommuting within commuting distance of reporting office in Chicago, IL.

qualifications & experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering or closely related field (or foreign degree equivalent).=

The position requires 4 years of experience in each of the following:

  • Managing and coordinating submittal, cost control, scheduling, reporting, and document control activities for construction projects;
  • Participating in the entire pre-construction, construction and post-construction process;
  • Estimating and developing project budgets;
  • Preparing and following up on Requests for Information (RFIs); and
  • Reviewing contract documents for compliance and submittal requirements.
  • Position requires up to 20% of time traveling locally to project sites in the Chicagoland area.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to build strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Able to apply innovative and effective management techniques in order to maximize employee performance.
  • A thorough comprehension of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards, etc. and the impact that they can have on a project.
  • Strong computer skills as well as a familiarity with the programs offered by Microsoft Office.

physical demands

  • Ability to remain in a seated position for the majority of the day while in home office (between 70% - 100% of work time) operating a computer, phone and other office equipment i.e., a copier and computer printer (between 70% -100% of work time)
  • Ability to lift or move supplies, equipment, boxes, documents and materials weighing up to 40lbs (occasionally heavier than 40lbs) in office suite and/or at work sites (i.e. vendor sites, client sites, etc.)
  • Must be able to communicate via phone, email, and in-person with colleagues and professional contacts(i.e. vendors, support service providers, etc.) for the majority of the day (between 70% -100% of worktime)

Working Conditions & Environment

  • May be required to work beyond office hours – some nights and weekends – as required by the needs
    of the department and this position as well as the needs of the organization.
  • Must be able to commute as required from office to job-site locations located within a 100-mile radius
