summary

Assistant superintendents support the Superintendent in the supervision and coordination of assigned projects to complete the work on time, within budget, and to the highest quality while serving as BIG Construction’s field representative. In the performance of this role, the Assistant Superintendent is responsible for protecting and promoting the interest of BIG Construction in all matters. Assistant Superintendents are expected to maintain positive and effective working relationships with both internal and external members of the Project Team and support departments.

key responsibilities

  • In general, BIG and union work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The role of a salaried superintendent will require working before and after tradesmen arrive on site for planning and wrap up. It is expected that work will occasionally occur on Saturdays.
  • Develop pre-construction logistics plans & turnover reports to support superintendents.
  • Identify and track long lead items.
  • Oversee and make decisions related to scheduling, delivery, logistics, quality control and trade employee staffing levels.
  • Create & distribute project schedules, look a-heads, logistics plans, methods of procedure, and determine sequencing of work. Develop and execute recovery strategies to maintain project schedule.
  • Oversee work among assigned trades to promote coordinated project operations.
  • Assist in the preparation of RFIs, providing recommended solutions for considerations.
  • Tracks jobsite tools and equipment.
  • Maintain the overall site safety program as required and ensure subcontractors comply with BIG standards and all applicable safety codes and regulations.
  • Maintain current 30-hour OSHA required certifications.
  • Schedule and run subcontractor coordination meeting.
  • Prepare and distribute weekly construction reports.
  • Complete & submit daily construction field reports.
  • Communicate with owners and architects/engineers about field issues, as well as investigate and resolve such issues.
  • Assist the project managers in the billing process as it relates to work on the site.
  • Manage efficient and timely project close-out, including punch list completion, as-built review and attic stock demobilization.
  • Supervise, mentor and train Field Engineers and/or Interns, as assigned.
  • Manage multiple projects.

qualifications & experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or one to three years or more experience in a field supervision role preferred.
  • Substantial background in construction trades as well as technical knowledge.
  • Experience managing all aspects of field operations including scheduling, quality control and coordinating sub-contractors.
  • Conscientious and flexible, with a strong work ethic and team-first attitude.
  • Highly motivated with strong skills in time management and prioritization.
  • Self-motivated individual with ability to work well in a highly interactive environment.

  • Strong computer skills as well as a familiarity with the programs offered by Microsoft Office.

physical demands

  • Ability to remain in a seated position for the majority of the day while in home office (between 70% - 100% of work time) operating a computer, phone and other office equipment i.e., a copier and computer printer (between 70% -100% of work time)
  • Ability to lift or move supplies, equipment, boxes, documents and materials weighing up to 40lbs (occasionally heavier than 40lbs) in office suite and/or at work sites (i.e. vendor sites, client sites, etc.)
  • Must be able to communicate via phone, email, and in-person with colleagues and professional contacts (i.e. vendors, support service providers, etc.) for the majority of the day (between 70% -100% of work time)

  • Regular communication with internal and external constituents is required, including occasionally
    outside of regular working hours.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction and/or company sponsorship.

Working Conditions & Environment

  • May be required to work beyond office hours – some nights and weekends – as required by the needs
    of the department and this position as well as the needs of the organization.
  • Must be able to commute as required from office to job-site locations located within a 100-mile radius
    from office as required. Reference employee handbook regarding mileage reimbursement.
